RIAA sinks to new lows

So I came across this post on slashdot and read it.  I had to re-read it because the title seemed so far off.

Basically, it sounds like this college kid has been sued by the RIAA and he has been working with someone at the RIAA hotline (or something similar) to try and negotiate the settlement.  After several attempts to try and work something out, the RIAA rep said “In fact, the RIAA has been known to suggest that students drop out of college or go to community college in order to be able to afford settlements.”

I think his response is approprate: "Are. You. Shitting. Me."

The RIAA's arrogance is truly beyond belief, isn't it?  I suppose, though, that it shouldn't come as any surprise... they've been operating as a cartel for so long, they think of themselves as entitled to exist. It's almost like the divine right of Kings--they think they have some sort of inherent right to continue in their current fashion.

None of this is going to change until the legislators stop allowing themselves to be bought-off by the RIAA/MPAA, and the courts grow a spine and stop the cycle of barratry. I find it interesting that the courts in Canada and the Netherlands rejected the very same arguments that the RIAA uses with such impunity in the United States.  In both of these countries, you need something called E-V-I-D-E-N-C-E to file a suit; something that is apparently not required in the United States.

I am so glad I do NOT live in America.
